Try a function run
Running is one of the best exercises you can do to increase cardio strength. But runners know the stress the repetition puts on muscles and joints.

"The most important thing a runner can do to minimize this stress is make sure their body is properly aligned," says Sara Nelson, Director of the Broomfield Egoscue Clinic. "Correct alignment makes the body more efficient."

Proper alignment improves blood flow to joints and organs, muscle development, and metabolism.

"One reason for this," Sara says, "is that a body that is not properly aligned often has a compensated posture often resulting in rounded shoulders, thoracic flexion and a forward head position. In this slouched position lung capacity is inhibited, which hampers many aspects of a healthy body. Proper alignment aides in an expanded lung capacity."

Sara recommends doing Egoscue exercises before running to make the body more functional during running, and "try varying your running routine with a function run that equalizes your muscles, letting weaker muscles gain strength."

Here's how:

1. Keep your pace barely over walking speed.
2. Loosen up your torso, shoulders, arms, and neck.
3. Breathe from the diaphragm.
4. Lean back at the waist until you feel perfectly erect.
5. Put bounce into your feet, ankles, and knees.
6. Let your arms pump easily as you run -- left, right, left -- but don't let them rise higher than your waist, and keep them swinging straight ahead.
7. Concentrate on the heel-ball-toe foot strike, with the feet pointing straight ahead.
8. Shoulders back, head up. Look around. Enjoy!

Sara works with individual athletes as well as teams looking to improve overall performance. If you'd like to begin a fitness routine but are not sure where to start, or if you'd like to improve your overall athletic erformance, contact her at 303-404-2232 to learn how the Egoscue method can help.

Pain free elbows, wrists, and hands
The deliciously cool summer weather made it easy to spend more time than ever outdoors. But if you played a lot of tennis or golf, you may be noticing some pain in arm and shoulder joints, biceps or triceps, and thumbs. Remember, pain is the body's way of telling us that we're doing something wrong. Try these stretches to ease pain in the elbows, wrists, and hands.

>>Standing Wall Clock: Stand toed in (pigeon toed) facing the wall. Place your forehead against the wall with your hands over head with your elbows extended. Place your hands into the "golfer's grip" and rotate your thumbs off the wall so they are pointed behind you. The rotation should come from her shoulders. Tighten your thighs and relax your stomach. HOLD this position for one minute.

>>Gravity Drop: Wearing rubber-soled shoes for traction (tennis shoes, etc.), hang your heels off a step or stairway with only the ball of each foot touching. Be sure both feet are pointing straight ahead and hip-width apart. With one hand or both, hold onto a railing for support. Let the weight of your body drop your heels off the stair. You will feel a great stretch in your low leg musculature. The key is to keep your hips over your heels and your shoulders in line with them also. Relax abdominals to breathe through belly. Hold this position for three minutes. (Check feet periodically).
